Do you have dusty blinds? You’re not alone. Cleaning window coverings can be a daunting and dreaded task – but it doesn’t have to be! We’re sharing tips on how to safely and effectively clean window blinds, without all the extra work.

The cleaning method will depend on the type of blinds. We’ll discuss the most common blind types below. Please contact us with any questions about how to clean window blinds or coverings not discussed here!

Wood Blinds

  • Remove dust using a clean cloth, dusting mitt, or feather duster. You can also use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. (Vacuums should only be used on wood blinds – do not vacuum blinds made from other materials!)
  • Do not use ultrasonic cleansers, scrubs or chemical solvents, as they can damage the blinds.
  • When cleaning windows, spray cleaner on a cloth, rather than directly on the window. This will avoid residual damage to the blind.

Cloth Tapes on Wood Blinds

  • Spot clean with standard fabric cleaning wipes. These are generally safe, but it’s a good idea to first perform a cleaning test on the underside of the blind, or where it is least visible.
  • For 100% polyester tapes, spot clean with cool distilled water on a clean white cloth. Gently blot with the cloth, then air dry.
  • Do not use water on tapes that are shiny or that have luster. Those are probably made of rayon or acetate, and water will stain. Use a fabric wipe instead.

Vinyl or Alternative Wood Blinds

  • Wipe with a dryer sheet to repel dust and reduce static cling.
  • Do not use ammonia-based products on vinyl shutters. Instead, clean with mild soap and water.
  • Do not use chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners, as they can cause damage.

Honeycomb Blinds

  • Lightly dust blinds. For faster cleaning, take blinds down, turn them sideways and shake out the dirt, dust or debris that is in between the pleats.
